Batanes has a rugged and diverse terrain. To capture its unique sense of place through photographs, it was necessary to climb over boulders, sink in the sand, tread carefully in the intertidal zone, balance on a heaving boat, ride a motorcycle, tricycle, or other vehicles on hairpin curves. We delayed dinner until after sunset, stayed up until moonrise, woke up early for moonset, all the while hoping for cloudless skies. The wind was a constant companion, and on the most elevated landscapes, any loose clothing was possibly a sail.
